The county-wide city of Wolfsburg in the state of Lower Saxony is one of the few German cities that has not grown historically. It was planned and built as a home for the many thousand employees of the Volkswagen plant located in the region. Accordingly, there are only a few historically relevant monuments, buildings or the like in Wolfsburg, dating back to times when a noble family had their seat in the fortress of the same name. The growth of the city with the 16 districts was very much related to the increase in jobs. Nevertheless, Wolfsburg is touristically successful around the topic of automobiles and Volkswagen. Despite its very targeted edification, there are seven nature conservation areas and many recreational areas in Wolfsburg. Apart from Volkswagen and many other industrial supply companies, Wolfsburg is characterized by local companies and businesses.
