The Coburg district with the administrative city of the same name is located in the state of Bavaria, directly on the former border to the GDR. For a long time, the city owed a subsidized economy to this border location, which has stagnated since the abolition of subsidies. Landscaped with many forest and green areas, as well as many historic castles and palaces, tourism in the district is becoming increasingly important. Economically, the region is otherwise characterized more by local and medium-sized companies.
