The cityscape is marked by the valley of the Wupper, whose steep slopes provide plenty of forest cover in the urban area. More than a third of the city area are overgrown making Wuppertal one of the greenest metropolis in Germany. The old villa district bear witness to the early industrialization of the city and 4.500 architectural monuments from the period decorate the urban area. Also known is the city for its monorail, the theatre of dance and the swimming opera.
