Bielefeld is located in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city was once the centre of the linen industry and today is mainly a well-known location for food production. The Old Market is the heart of Bielefeld's old town. The Theatre "am Alten Markt" still contains parts of the 13th-century Old Town Hall. Beside some private residences from the Middle Ages numerous villas from the period of the cityscape characterize the city.
