Mannheim is a university city as well as a major industrial and commercial city with one of the most important inland ports in Europe. Many inventions with worldwide success come from this city. For example, the two-wheeler, the automobile or the electric elevator. Since 2014 Mannheim is " UNESCO City of Music " because there is an important centre of German pop music here. In Mannheim, the former lords have left many monuments. Among the buildings in the baroque style is the Royal Palace, one of the largest baroque castles in Europe.
