The city of Gelsenkirchen was marked earlier mainly due to the extraction of lignite and was also called the "city of the 1000 fires " because of the coke ovens. Meanwhile, especially the solar industry has great significance for the city. Gelsenkirchen has numerous theatres and museums, including a very large collection of model trains. A famous attraction is the Hans-Sachs-Haus in downtown whose extraordinary architecture is known in the whole country.
