The cities region Aachen is an association of cities and municipalities in the west of Germany. The region is very close to the borders with Holland and Belgium as well as the natural region Eifel. It was created in 2009 from the previous "Kreis Aachen". The city center Aachen is culturally and architecturally very diverse: from Aachen with partial large town charm to still very historic places, which look more medieval as modern. The nature parks Eifel and Hohes Venn begin or are part of the urban districts. As a result, there are many natural areas and forests, some of which however have been redesignated in the former coal mining area in the region, which has shaped many places. In addition to the Rhineland, the city districts are also one of the high-rises of the carnival in Germany.
