Pirna is the administrative capital of the district and the largest city of the region. The city is borders directly on Dresden the capital of Saxony and is embedded by rivers and mountainous landscape. These Saxon town revolves around a very interesting historical city center as well with the market and the church of Mary. Of particular importance for the city is the sandstone production. Among many other historic monuments for example the Dresden Frauenkirche was built of material from this Region.
