Capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The city of Mainz, whose name has been written in various forms throughout history, lies directly on the banks of the Rhine river. Historically Mainz gained high economic, religious and cultural importance very early. Among other things, this was due to the resettlement of the bishop, its early transformation into a "free city", and the fact that Mainz was the seat of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. After the French occupation after the Second World War, Mainz became the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Due to the favorable location in central Germany and the good connection by road, rail and river Rhine, Mainz is now an important economic location. Also the science has strong presence, among others represented by the "Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz " as well as various other universities. Mainz also plays an important role in the media industry. In addition, Mainz is one of the metropolises of the carnival, a tradition very old in Germany and still actively cultivated today.
