The economic growth of Eschweiler is mainly - like other cities in the StaedteRegion Aachen - due to its former coal mining industry, which started in the late Middle Ages and, over the centuries, assumed high industrial proportions with more than 80 mines. The first stock company in the mining segment was founded here. Eschweiler as a garrison town was also of military importance in the past. With the closing of the remaining mines, some parts of the infrastructure were used to develop Eschweiler eventually into a logistics and industrial location. Nowadays, also many service companies, the waste disposal industry, as well as major markets and large shopping centers are located in Eschweiler.
