Monschau is seen as a "gateway to the Eifel", as it is located in the nature reserves Rureifel and Hohes Venn-Eifel. Monschau consists of seven districts, although these are geographically independent communities. Due to its location right on the river Rur, Monschau was a relevant production site for textiles. The Monschauer mustard is still produced as well as the high-proof alcoholic liquor "Els". Monschau still looks like a medieval city, which is why Monschau is a very attractive tourist destination. In summer hiking and cycling tourists and in winter even occasionally skiers appreciate Monschau and the beautiful nature in which the city is located.
