Population: approx. 49.360
Surface area: 119,66 km²

The district town of Peine is located in the district of the same name in Lower Saxony. The city, founded in 1220, owes its growth and prosperity to the processing steel industry. Even today a special form of steel is called "Peiner". In the course of his history, Peine was occupied in various wars from other countries, which is also reflected in many historical buildings and in the streets. For example, there is a roundabout which is a replica of "Place Charles-de-Gaulle" in Paris, built at the time of the French occupation. As a result of the steel crisis in the 1970s, Peine experienced an economic transformation, during which many companies in the processing industry and the service sector settled in Peine and to this day steadily growing industries developed.
