The community of Lengede in the county of Peine is a federation of originally five villages and municipalities. The municipality is characterized by mining as well as a nature reserve, which was built on former coal mining sites. Lengede owes a certain fame to mining, as in 1963 there was a dramatic pitfall that spilled nearly 200 men. The rescue of a majority of men under most difficult conditions was also known as the "Miracle of Lengede", which was adapted to many films.
