The community of Vechelde in the district of Peine is located directly between the towns of Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Peine near the river Oker. The community was created in the 1970s as a combination of 17 places and belongs to the district of Peine since this time, previously to the county of Braunschweig. The amount of the original community part and the rather large area forced the municipality to still operate 13 fire brigade bases. Vechelde is well-connected by road and rail, as well as by the Oker and the Salzgitter canal over water. Vechelde is now a popular place to live, thanks to the fast accessibility to many economic centers in the area.
