The municipality is determined by the charming marshland with its meadows and moats as well as by the Elbe and the Ilmenau with its dikes. Biotopes and smaller lakes enliven the picture. Agriculture and livestock farming are still of great importance in this area. Also horse breeding and equestrian sport are traditionally operated in the area . The extended path network as well as the Elberadweg, which leads from the Elbquelle up to its mouth in Cuxhaven, invite to cycling and hiking. The volunteer fire brigades - as well as more than 30 local associations - offer a variety of activities which contribute to the revitalization of the village community. There are seven kindergartens in the municipality as well as four primary schools with an outside school. Local services save the children from long distance school trips. Older pupils attend the Ernst-Reinstorf-Schule in Marschacht, a high school with a gymnasial offer. The varied leisure activities in the region range from hiking, cycling, horseback riding, tennis and mini golf to fishing, water skiing and other water sports. Resident doctors, grocery stores, a weekly market as well as a broad spectrum of medium-sized crafts companies complete the supply within the local community.
