The town of Freiberg is the administrative center of the district of Mittelsachsen and the location of the historic "Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg", which is the last mining university in Europe. It is located in Freiberg through the many and very different mineral deposits with, among other things, 180 different minerals. For over 800 years Freiberg was very much influenced by mining. In mining, the growth and geographic extent of the city is also justified. Since the 1970s, a structural change has been taking place with the focus on semiconductors and solar technology, which made Freiberg part of the "Silicon Saxony" economic development association. Freiberg's historic inner city is a listed monument and is partly UNESCO cultural heritage.
