The town of Mittweida is located in the district of Mittelsachsen and is the seat of the administrative community of the same name. It is also the seat of the academic university Mittweida. The town, consisting of nine municipalities, is situated on the banks of the river Zschopau. As a result, Mittweida has historically been particularly known for the textile industry. The city, which was regarded as very typical for the region, also organized the "Day of the Saxons" in 2008, the largest folk festival in the entire state. The local, very special granite deposits are due to Mittweida, which has been named a granite type after the city.
