Geography: The smallest state in terms of area is located in the far southwest of Germany and borders on France in the south and on Luxembourg in the west. The capital is Saarbrücken.

Culture: Because of the close proximity to France many people in the Saarland are able to speak French. It is the only state that prescribes the language as mandatory for all high school students. The country is home to some soil and monuments with Celtic and Roman origin.

Economy: By the middle of the 20th century, Saarland was mainly influenced by mining and the steel industry. Meanwhile, the automotive industry ( Ford ) makes a large part of the economy.
