Similar to other cities in the region, Herzogenrath and its districts of Kohlscheid and Merkstein had been characterized for a long time by regional mining. Also of historical interest is the 14 kilometres long border with the Netherlands. Originally consisting of walls and fences, later mines and small piles, the border nowadays can hardly be recognized as a middle line on a road along the border to Kerkrade (NL). The river "Wurm" also flows through Herzogenrath, on its banks many nature conservation and recreational areas have been developed, which makes Herzogenrath attractive as a residential region. Industrial and technology companies have also been attracted to Herzogenrath.
