Ahaus is located in the district of Borken and the administrative district of Muenster. For the first time already mentioned around 1030, the city exists as a former noble seat for quite a long time. Therefore, there are some historic buildings including a large castle complex. Ahaus is characterized by residential areas and local economy. Ahaus has cross-border awareness through the nuclear waste storage facility located there and the regular protests and demonstrations against nuclear waste and its transport.
